Laminar Seal Rings
Laminar Seal Rings are metallic labyrinth seals consisting of multiple retaining rings installed in a groove arrangement to help protect assemblies from contamination. Unlike traditional rubber seals, Laminar Seal Rings are manufactured from carbon steel or stainless steel, making them well suited for high temperatures and corrosive environments.
Labyrinth Seal Design
Helps protect critical assemblies from dirt, water, particles, gases, and other contaminants
- Built for Harsh Environments
Manufactured entirely from metal to withstand high temperatures and corrosive conditions.
- Interchangeable with FEY Rings
Standard series available to replace compatible FEY ring configurations.
Overview
Smalley Laminar Seal Rings consist of multiple rings arranged within a groove to create a metallic labyrinth seal. They help protect critical assemblies from dirt, water splashing, particles, gases, and other sources of contamination. Their non-contact design provides an effective sealing solution for applications requiring protection from contamination without the use of traditional contact seals.
Manufactured from carbon steel or stainless steel rather than rubber, neoprene, or other non-metallic materials, Laminar Seal Rings provide a durable sealing solution for applications operating at high speeds, elevated temperatures, and in corrosive environments. Available in a variety of configurations featuring different numbers of turns and rings per set, they can be specified to suit a range of operating environments and contamination levels. Smalley also offers standard Laminar Seal Ring series that are interchangeable with compatible FEY Laminar Ring configurations.
Standard Laminar Seal Rings are available from stock in diameters ranging from .0625 to 50" and 15 to 1300 mm. Standard configurations include single-turn, three-ring sets; single-turn, five-ring sets; two-turn, two-ring sets; and two-turn, three-ring sets. Installation information can be found here.

Application Examples
Laminar Seal Rings are well suited for connector applications where gases build pressure within a central cavity. By providing protection on both ends of the cavity, the seal arrangement helps prevent contaminants from entering while allowing gases to enter and exit the assembly cleanly.
In this example, QSD Series Laminar Seal Rings cling to a shaft using a two-turn ring configuration. When increased contamination protection is required, multiple seal sets can be incorporated within the assembly. This connector utilizes two QSD seal sets in separate grooves, along with a third ring arrangement that creates an additional labyrinth to further enhance sealing performance.
Laminar Seal Rings are commonly used to retain grease and lubricant while helping prevent dirt, water, and other contaminants from reaching the bearings. By reducing contamination, they can help extend service life and maintain bearing performance.
