Smalley is a global leader in retaining ring design and manufacturing, with over 6,000 standard retaining rings and extensive custom capabilities. Known for inventing the Spirolox® spiral retaining ring, Smalley pioneered the edgewinding process and continues to set the standard for retaining ring innovation. As a retaining ring manufacturer for over 100 years, Smalley offers a comprehensive product portfolio that includes spiral retaining rings, constant section rings (snap rings), self-locking rings, tapered section rings (circlips), Hoopster® low-profile retaining rings, WaveRings®, and laminar seal rings. Each ring type offers unique performance characteristics to address specific retention, installation, and application requirements.
Unlike traditional die-stamped circlips and retaining rings, Smalley's Spirolox® spiral retaining rings and Constant Section retaining rings are edgewound from pre-tempered flat wire. This unique manufacturing method produces parts with Circular-Grain® metallurgy, resulting in greater strength than conventional stamped rings. Spirolox retaining rings feature a uniform cross-section with No Ears to Interfere®, maximizing usable space within an assembly and eliminating interference with mating components. Their edgewound design also facilitates installation and removal without special tools. The material efficiency of the edgewinding process also makes exotic materials a cost-effective option. Smalley retaining rings are available as internal retaining rings for housings and external retaining rings for shafts.
