Tapered Section Retaining Rings, commonly referred to as circlips or snap rings, are traditional retaining rings designed for high thrust loads and heavy-duty applications. Featuring a tapered radial wall, the ring's width decreases from the top toward the free ends, helping ensure nearly full contact with the groove when installed. Available in internal and external configurations, these retaining rings function as removable shoulders to securely retain components within an assembly. Their combination of strength, simplicity, and widespread industry use has made circlips one of the most familiar retaining ring styles used today.
Tapered Section Retaining Rings (Circlips) are among the most widely recognized retaining ring styles used across many industries. Through Smalley's partnership with Beneri, a leading Italian tapered section ring manufacturer since 1958, customers now have access to tapered section retaining rings alongside Smalley's Spirolox® Retaining Rings and Constant Section Rings, all backed by the same quality and support they expect from Smalley. Also known as circlips or snap rings, tapered section retaining rings are designed for high thrust loads and heavy-duty applications. Their tapered radial wall profile narrows toward the free ends of the ring, a design characteristic that allows the ring to seat against the groove when installed. Available in internal designs for housing and bore grooves as well as external designs for shaft grooves, tapered section retaining rings function as removable shoulders that securely retain components within an assembly.
Tapered Section Retaining Rings are available in Carbon Spring Steel SAE 1060/1074 and stocked at Smalley's facility for improved availability and ordering convenience. Installation and removal are accomplished using circlip pliers engaged in the ring's lug holes, making them a familiar solution for assembly and maintenance personnel. These retaining rings are commonly used in automotive and agricultural machinery, furniture hardware, and many other mechanical assemblies. Their combination of heavy-duty performance, industry-standard designs, and cost-effective availability continue to make tapered section retaining rings a trusted solution across a wide range of applications.
Beneri circlips are trusted all over the world in various applications such as:

Tapered Section Retaining Rings utilize lugs and lug holes to aid installation and removal with retaining ring pliers. During installation, ring expansion or contraction should be limited to help avoid deformation of the ring. Refer to the installation guides for detailed instructions on internal and external ring installation.
We recommend using pliers DIN 5254, which have stop and return screws to safely and gradually control ring expansion.
We recommend using pliers DIN 5256, which have stop and return screws to safely and gradually control ring contraction.
